Week 9

Reflect on our discussion concerning racism and prejudice in the world, in America, and in our immediate environments.

Comments

  1. I thought it was a very interesting discussion because there are many different point of views from people of different race and backgrounds. America has come a along way from the awful time of racism 50+ years ago. Racism is hardly ever present in our immediate environments (on campus at least). Who can technically be racist and who cannot is a whole other argument with many different angles like the ones discussed in class. Racism seems to have multiple definitions and understandings, so while one person may think an act of racism is occurring, another will argue that it is not.

  2. Our in-class discussion was interesting to me because I have never had a discussion like that in a classroom. I enjoyed hearing everyone's input and thoughts relating towards the subject. Racism is a vague term because many people have different definitions of racism. While racism is still an issue in the world today, I have rarely witnessed racism in my lifetime. I think the key to ending racism completely is being able to have discussions like the one that we had Wednesday in class. When everyone discusses his or her thoughts and feelings, it goes a lot smoother than when people argue and fuss about racism.

  3. Whether you or not you can be racist is debatable based on the the definition you give for racism. Many people believe that an individual can only be racist if they are part of a race that has been oppressive . Others believe that an individual is racist if they discriminate against a another race or ethnicity regardless of their races history. However, I personally do not believe that the definition of racism matters at all. I believe that no races/ ethnicity should discriminate against anyone based on race. No type of prejudice actions should be acceptable, no matter what group or individual is performing them.

  4. I thought our discussion about racism was very interesting. I thought the idea of can you be racist against your own people was very thought-provoking. In my opinion I think you definitely can be racist against a group you belong to. However, I can also see why some might say otherwise. It's funny because the whole discussion reminded me of a Dave Chapelle skit about a black KKK member (would advise you to watch). I thought it was also particularly relevant because it relates to my video argument. My argument is that businesses should be allowed to discriminate against people. My view is that I don't agree with any form of racism or prejudice in the world, but I do believe you should be allowed to express you ideas however you want (along as you don't infringe on the rights of others). I would love to have more discussions about politics in class because these ideas intrigue me. I think the most controversial ideas are the most interesting because people always have such polar view points.

  5. The discussion and readings regarding racism and prejudice were thought-provoking and provided topics to address and question. It was interesting to discuss what the definition of racism is and the different types. Also, I never thought about whether or not people in minorities can be racist or not. It is interesting to think about what is considered racism and based on the meaning, who can be racist. I also had not thought about what is currently being done about racism or what should be done. I think that addressing the situation provides progress towards solving the problem of racism. Making people more aware through calm, mature discussions would probably help to solve the issue.

  6. I enjoyed our discussion on racism. My high school was considered very "PC" and never had discussions remotely like the one we had in class on Wednesday, so it was nice to actually hear my peers' opinions on the matter. In one of our readings, Dear White People was quoted : "Black people can't be racist. Prejudice, yes, but not racist. Racism describes a system of disadvantage based on race. Black people can't be racist since we don't stand to benefit from such a system". I have never thought of "reverse-racism" in this way, but after seeing this I agree.

  7. Our discussion was really interesting because I think a lot of times it's not talked about. Sometimes it's like the elephant in the room. I think it's a really debatable topic and everyone has different views on it. I'm not really firm on my beliefs on it because it's kind of a grey area especially with all the crazes in the media like black lives matter versus back the blue. I think it's good to keep having discussions in the world to evolve as a society and cease racism/prejudice.

  8. Our discussion was interesting to say the least. I don't think that the solution is to sweep it under the rug like it never happens or ever did happen but a solution might be for people to just stop being asses towards each other. There is hate on both sides of the argument, but there are also people on both sides that sees everyone for what they are, people, and that can make the whole difference. People take the argument on both sides and decide to dissociate the people from the argument where the racists and victims are objects and the only thing that this will do is continue the problem. When you look at the other side as a person it can change your whole point of view and for this to work both sides have to do this and allow their views to be broken by empathy towards other human beings.

  9. I think this is an interesting but serious discussion. I never encounter racism and prejudice in my life, but I know there are still many racists in the world and lots of people suffer racism and prejudice that bring their mental health indelible wounds. The boundary of racism sometimes is difficult to define, and that may cause a misunderstanding which leads to a deeper contradiction. However, I really against racism and prejudice and hope everyone in the world can be respect whatever his race.

  10. I thought our discussion in class was compelling because there were several different and often opposing opinions on the topics of racism and reverse racism. It was clear to me that different people had different definitions of racism and what it means to be a racist. I think it is important to have discussions like these in our modern society as it is through respectful debate that we will be able to get to the bottom of these issues and progress as a nation. While it is fair to say that our nation has come a long way since the 19th and 20th century, racism clearly still exist and needs to be addressed, and discussions like the one we had on Friday are necessary in order for this to happen.

  11. I thought our discussion in was interesting because usually teachers don't take the time to discuss major issues like this, especially when it's a sensitive subject. I did think it was important because it's a prevalent issue and discussions is a huge step towards possibly ending racism. we have to be able to talk about it because that way everyone gets a say and we can move on to the next step from there. It's a very debatable topic since everyone's views are so different and one wrong thing said can upset someone. Racism is blown up in the media as well and what's said their can really influence people beliefs and stances on the topic, but i think it's good that people keep discussing it because ignoring the problem won't make it go away.

  12. I thought the discussion in class was very productive, because it brought forth ideas that many people do not usually think about. For example, reverse-racism is not really the first thing people think about when addressing racism. I think it definitely shed light on the idea of reverse-racism for me, because I had never previously thought deeply about it. Our discussion of racism was in the midst of our country is focusing on the issues of racism in today's world. For instance, the many NFL players are in protest of today's racial injustice by taking a knee during the national anthem. This is definitely a hot topic because President Trump has recently addressed the issue of sitting during the national anthem in the past few weeks.

  13. I believe that the racism in the United States has become almost nonexistent in our society. While there are still a few groups of people who have racist beliefs, I believe that the majority of racism in America is overestimated. It is very common for the mainstream media to race-bate to push political agendas. Because racism so highly disapproved amongst all kinds of different people, the media forces the masses to jump on the bandwagon of any agenda the second someone claims a racist intent of the opposing party, even if it is not fact based.
